Our Training Methods

At Wild Paw K9, we believe that every dog is an individual with their own personality and needs. This means that every dog deserves a unique approach to training. Whether it’s a puppy needing socialization and manners, a dog struggling with leash reactivity, or a more serious case of resource guarding or human aggression, we specialize in creating a customized plan to help you manage and achieve your training goals.

We are well-versed in a wide variety of training methods, with the LIMA (Least Invasive Minimally Aversive) method being at the forefront. This method focuses on utilizing positive reinforcement techniques as much as possible, and always to help the dog learn new behaviors, while keeping any aversive techniques to a minimum, used as necessary for the most effective and safe training experience. Positive reinforcement involves the use of treats, toys, and physical or verbal praise to reward the dog for performing a desired behavior. While teaching new behaviors, we never add consequences, unless we are certain the dog knows exactly what we are expecting of them.

This does not mean that we will limit any dog’s training experience without the use of tools at our disposal. Tools can be anything that aids in the training process from treats and rewards to different types of leashes and collars. There are so many great tools we have at our disposal, and we pride ourselves on educating owners in the safe and proper use of many of them. For the safety of the dog and those around them, there are behaviors that we may need to stop as soon as possible by setting boundaries and establishing consequences. All of these things will be discussed in detail during our 2 hour consultations prior to signing on for any of our training programs. Our goal is always to explain the full training process and the benefit of why we do things the way we do.

Our consultations will involve a one-on-one meeting with our trainer in your home. This gives us the opportunity to discuss your dog’s health and behavioral background, previous history and training, and your goals for the dog’s training. From this we will create a fully customized training plan for you and your dog. We are fully committed to helping you achieve your goals and providing the most opportunities available to your dog’s training. As always, more information can be given during a phone call or consultation- set yours up below!
