Meet the Trainer

My name is Alex Wheeler. I’m originally from Butler, a small town in Pennsylvania. I have owned and loved animals my entire life. I have always aspired to train dogs, often teaching the family dogs new tricks and dreaming up future business schemes (in grade school!). My first opportunity to train professionally came in 2014 when I became the dog trainer for a popular chain pet store. I became the head trainer at this store for almost four years, and it gave me the chance to learn the basics of client relationships and dog training, and as always, continue my education, spurring me on to learn as much as possible. When I left this position, I had met several wonderful clients who became friends, and that word of mouth allowed me to continue training dogs in my own time. I was eventually able to start my first business providing in-home training sessions and group classes for local dog owners. It was an amazing success and a fantastic experience.

In 2021, I was given to opportunity to train in Pittsburgh with Paw & Order, a phenomenal training company which would allow me to branch out and continue my learning and growth as a trainer. This allowed me to continue growing my training education and handling skills, as this is where I learned to address some of the more severe behavioral problems that pet owners face and how we as trainer can change both dogs and humans lives for the better. During this time, I lived and trained in Pittsburgh and learned and worked with some of the best and most talented trainers I’ve ever met. Trainers I will still recommend to clients in the area looking for help!

Late in 2022, I took a short break from training professionally to focus on raising my personal dog, my Border Collie Felix. We did lots of training and had the chance to try many different dog sports including Shed Hunt, Dock Diving, Weight Pull, and Frisbee to name a few! He has even achieved a few titles in these sports!

In 2023, after working in the veterinary medicine field for a short time, I made the move to Fairmont, West Virginia to be with my partner Eli, who has been a MAJOR support in all of my dog-related endeavors! We currently live here along with Felix, our Border Collie mix puppy Percy, a few reptiles, and my retired racehorse, Prince. Felix and I often compete in a variety of sports and he works as my demo dog for training clients. I have a variety of certifications and continued education, including courses in canine behavioral modification for fear and aggression and canine first aid. Alongside training, I am a certified Humane Officer at a local shelter, continuing my love of helping and protecting animals in our local community daily. I am so excited to have the opportunity to train again here in the Mountain State and meet so many new faces- furry and human alike! I hope to work with you soon!
